Coaching
Ever Thought About Coaching ?
This year, as in the past we have been fortunate to have a number of highly qualified and motivated coaches for each of our SAMFA teams. As part of the Capital District Minor Football Association we are bound by their regulations. One of these rules is that each Head Coach must have a minimum of a level one coaching certificate as outlined in the National Coaching Program. This involves three parts theory, technical and one year practical experience. This helps to provide fair play as well as development of skills in a safe environment. In the past we have been able to satisfy these rules as long as one coach on the team has his or her level one. On occasion however, we have had to do some last minute scrambling to make sure these requirements are met. In an effort to avoid this we would like to encourage current assistant coaches or any other interested parents to take necessary clinics to obtain their level one.
THEORY: • Can be taken as a home study course involving 5 – 8 hours or • 1 and ½ day clinics at various locations in the late winter or early spring.
TECHNICAL: • Usually one and half day clinic at the U of A or another venue that involves practical on field football instructional methods.
PRACTICAL: • One year experience actually coaching football.
The cost of these courses will be covered by SAMFA for a limited number of interested parties. It is not necessary to be a football expert and you won’t necessarily be asked to become a Head Coach. If you are able to help out as an assistant under a more experienced coach, we would be more than happy to have you aboard. I found that coaching has been very rewarding. If you are interested in level 1 or more advanced clinic’s please contact Len McCoshen, mailto://themcoshens@telus.net, or any other member of the SAMFA Executive.
**It is mandatory that all Coaches, Assistant Coaches and Parent Volunteers do not smoke at games and practices. This “no smoking policy” is designed to foster and portray healthy role models.**
