Flag Football FAQs

What is flag football?

Flag football is a non-contact version of football where players wear flags on their belts. Instead of tackling, defenders stop the play by pulling a flag from the ball carrier.  SAMFA plays 5v5 flag football at all age divisions.

Is previous football experience required?

No. Players of all skill levels are welcome, including those who have never played football before.

What equipment is required?

SAMFA provides the necessary team equipment and flags. Players are responsible for:

  • Athletic clothing
  • Cleats or running shoes
  • Mouthguard (provided)
  • Water bottle

Are there weight restrictions?

No. Flag football divisions do not have weight restrictions.

How are teams formed?

Teams are typically formed based on age division and registration numbers. SAMFA strives to create balanced teams whenever possible.

Can my child request to play with a friend?

Friend requests may be considered but cannot be guaranteed. Team placement decisions are based on maintaining balanced rosters.

When are practices and games held?

Practice and game schedules vary by division. Specific schedules will be communicated by coaches once teams are formed.

Where are games played?

Games are generally played at the Edmonton Flag Football Association fields in South Edmonton.  Sometimes games may be played elsewhere.

Can my child play if they have never played football before?

Absolutely! Flag football is a great introduction to the sport. Our coaches focus on teaching fundamental skills, teamwork, sportsmanship, and having fun. Players of all experience levels are welcome.

What equipment do I need to buy?

Players should have athletic clothing, a water bottle, and cleats (recommended but not required). SAMFA will provide team jerseys, flags, mouthguards, and footballs for practices and games. Mouthguards are required for all participants.

Is there a uniform?

Yes. Each player will receive a team shirt, shorts, and flag belt for the season. These items are included with registration and players get to keep them at the end of the season.

Are there separate teams for boys and girls?

No. Flag football teams are co-ed, meaning boys and girls play together on the same teams. SAMFA welcomes all athletes and provides an inclusive environment where everyone can learn, compete, and have fun.

My child is new to sports. Is flag football a good place to start?

Yes! Flag football is one of the best sports for beginners. The non-contact format helps athletes develop coordination, confidence, teamwork, and football skills in a fun and supportive environment.

Can my child try flag football before registering?

SAMFA plans to offer several "Try It Out" sessions before the season begins. These sessions are designed to give athletes an opportunity to experience flag football, meet coaches, and have fun before committing to the season. Dates, times, and participation costs (if any) will be announced closer to registration.

My child seems small for their division. Can they play in a younger age group?

No. SAMFA follows the age divisions established by Football Canada, and players must register in the division that corresponds to their birth year. These rules are in place to ensure consistency, fairness, and player safety across all football programs in Canada.

It's important to remember that size is often much less of a factor in flag football than in tackle football. Success in flag football is built on skills such as speed, agility, coordination, teamwork, and decision-making. Many smaller athletes thrive in flag football because their quickness and ability to change direction can be a significant advantage. Players of all sizes and athletic abilities can be successful and enjoy the game.

How long is the season?

The Spring Flag Football season typically runs from mid-March through to early June, weather permitting.

What happens if a practice or game is cancelled due to weather?

SAMFA will communicate cancellations through its website, email, and/or team communication channels as soon as possible.

Can parents volunteer?

Absolutely. SAMFA relies on volunteer coaches, assistant coaches, and team managers. No previous football experience is required for most volunteer roles.

What if there are not enough players to form a team?

If a division does not have enough participants or volunteers to field a team, families will be contacted regarding available options, which may include placement with another club or a full refund.

Are refunds available?

Refund policies are outlined during registration. Please review the registration policy for specific refund information.

How do I register?

Registration opens in early January 2027. Registration can be found here on the SAMFA website.

Who do I contact if I have questions?

Please contact the SAMFA through the contact information listed on the website for assistance with registration, schedules, or volunteer opportunities.
